Vocal communication is a crucial part of behavior in most mammals, mediating social and sexual interactions.
Our work comprises all main thematic complexes of communication, from sound production to function. We aim at understanding mechanisms and the selective forces that shaped specific signals, skills and communication systems. We strongly focus on African and Asian elephants, highly social mammals with well-developed communication skills, but also work on giraffes, giant pandas, cheetahs, African wild dogs, lions and Tasmanian devils, and, most recently, manatees. |
